2016 Favourites

Hello 2017. *Insert obligatory new year new me shit here.* Let’s be honest, these next few months will 100% be me trying to post and drowning in college work instead. I am trying to find a weekly upload time that I will actually stick to, because to be honest it would be nice for this blog to actually go somewhere rather than the bedrooms of me and everyone I beg to read. Hi Facebook friends lots of love xxx

But back to obligatory writings, and my favourite things of 2016. I have a lot of areas to cover and things to include, let me know if you want info on anything else and any posts you want from me in the comments, and let’s jump straight in.

As a music lover and concert addict, although my concert count for last year was lower than usual, this year should definitely make up for that. But last year’s albums made up for it too. Even though it only came out in November, Little Mix’s Glory Days was DEFINITELY my favourite album of the year. It’s just full of feel good catchy songs, like the girls always are, and no one can deny these four are dropping banger after banger at the moment. The album does not disappoint. I also can’t go without mentioning Illuminate by Shawn Mendes. B e a u t i f u l. Wow. I mean this boy has achieved many of my life goals and is only a few months older than me. His album reflects his passion and talent and I cannot wait to see him put it all on stage in April. James Arthur’s album Back from the Edge was another album full of talent and passion, but held a deeper meaning, connecting with his struggles with mental health, so many of the songs would definitely reassure someone of the same position. His songs are just so easy to listen to and love. Trying to sing them however… give me a few more weeks and a little bit of heartbreak. And finally I can’t not mention Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande. Every album mentioned features insane voices and Ariana’s definitely comes to match. Her songs have the same feeling as LM with feel good songs for women that are a little bit PG when appropriate, if you know what I mean. I could probably list you all four of these album track lists in order because this is all I had on repeat in 2016.

Now TV addict Niamh watched some fab series in 2016. It can go without saying I loved Stranger Things, but I can’t bring myself to write what everyone else has. NBC’s Chicago PD has been amazing this past season. I used to love The Bill and this has that sort of esq to it with police drama, it also has one of my favourite actresses (Sophia Bush) and onscreen couples and I just can’t not love it. Now ABC has the best Thursday night TV on planet earth and it deeply upsets me that I’m not American and cannot fully appreciate it. Instead I have to wait and watch it … other ways. (On Netflix in like 8 years YAWN no, I’ll drop you some links wink wink.) ((If I never post again here is why.)) ANYWAY they air Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and Grey’s Anatomy all in one night and honestly that is just the best night of TV ever. If you’re American and don’t appreciate that then never talk to me. When I go to New York in March I actually might just stay in the hotel on the Thursday to live my dream. Big plans. These three TV shows have produced such amazing seasons for 2016 and I can’t wait to see what this year brings. If you’ve never watched any of these shows I can safely say you’re missing out, every single one is 10/10 trust me. (And the first seasons of some are on Netflix I think lol.)  Now as much as I love PLL 2016 shall not be discussed as there were some good eps there were many… many pointless ones and for that I pray that these last 10 in April do one of my favourite programmes justice.

In terms of films I’d not seen many new ones last year, although the list of ones I’ve wanted to see has been as long as my arm. One I did see and LOVED was London has fallen. I love the first film Olympus has fallen and even though it was basically the same storyline, it’s a genre I just love. Along with White House Down, films where they try to attack the president etc, although scary, are always so so good. I definitely think I can be more of an Action film kind of girl, than chick flicks, but I do love a good chick flick. I did see Me before You aswell and cried a bit but not as much as I expected. It was a really lovely film though, definitely worth a girly night in watch. I only read a few books too, I read Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour on holiday, and really loved how realistic it seemed. It wasn’t a rushed and forced love story, and it was really original from things I’ve read before. Similarly on originality was We Were Liars. Oh. My. GOD. READ THIS BOOK. I read it all in one night, I didn’t go to sleep until 4am because I was so addicted. I can’t even explain it because I’ll give it away. Just read it. It was amazing.

Finally for the chunk we’ve all been waiting for. Make-up. I purchased a set of Morphe brushes this year off beauty bay for such a good price and I don’t think I can fault them. I’m no make-up expert, as much as I’d love to be or say I am, but it is safe too say that they do the job. My two ride or die eyeshadow palettes have been Fortune Favours the Brave by Makeup Revolution which you can read about here, and, even though I only got it for Christmas, Too Faced’s Chocolate Bon Bon palette is my life! Just so amazing both of them I cannot fault either product or price. Another palette I have loved has been the Sleek Face Contour Kit in Light. It comes with a lovely powder contour which is so easy to blend and a champagne highlight, which I find can rub off a bit of makeup sometimes but overall is good and a gorgeous shade. The Falsies mascara by Maybelline was originally a love hate relationship but now is definitely a love, considering I have naturally long lashes it’s hard to find a none-clumpy mascara, but this one just adds that last bit of length they need. And finally I can’t not mention NYX liquid lipsticks. Whether their suede, lingerie or soft matte creams, once I got the hang of applying them, none of them have disappointed me. The suede ones are probably my favourite, but they only have two natural-ish shades which is upsetting. Dear NYX please make more.

Well that was quite the ramble, no change there of course. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! Stick to those resolutions you’re going great, do it for me because I’m definitely not.

Thanks for reading. Until next time.

Favourite Drugstore Beauty Products

Okay so I’m poor and a lil bit of a cheap skate so drugstore beauty products are my life. I am looking to up my game with some high-end products soon so please feel free to recommend some in the comments below! But for now, enjoy reading about my favourite drugstore products and if you use or try any let me know what you think.

First up has to be the Golden Sugar Ultra Blush Palette by Makeup Revolution. As I’ve said before I’m a big fan of Makeup Revolution and this palette is probably one of my holy grail products. It has an amazing highlight in there and some darker shades that I like to use for a subtle contour whenever I’m not going all out with make-up, but don’t fancy looking like a pea-head. All the shades have such a nice pigment and last really well. I think I got this palette for about £6 from Superdrug so definitely check it out. I would also recommend their singular highlighters as I recently purchased the Golden Lights one and it is amaaaaaazing. (And only £3)

Eyeliner is a must in my make-up bag, and I love love love the L’Oreal SuperLiner in Perfect Slim. It’s an eyeliner pen with a precise tip so it’s so easy to apply and get that perfect fleeky line. I buy it in intense black but they do several other shades for a more subtle line, but the intense black certainly lives up to its name. This is £6.99.

Another Makeup Revolution product I have to mention is the Fortune Favours the Brave eyeshadow palette. This was £10. I did a full blog post with swatches of this palette about a month ago which you can read here. I honestly swear by this palette. I may also do a future post on all the palettes I have by Revolution because I love them all – if you’d be interested in this let me know in the comments.

I was shopping the other day and Superdrug had one of their 3 for 2 offers on, and with a deal like that I obviously couldn’t leave without buying some things, so I bought one of the Matte Me liquid lipsticks by Sleek. I bought the shade ‘Shabby Chic’ which is a dark pink colour and it is so lovely. I haven’t worn this out yet but when I tested it, it was so good. It was clear that it will last well and the colour pigment was insane. There is definitely a knack to applying liquid lipstick but nothing that you couldn’t easily get the hang of.

In terms of brushes, I really need to up my game, I have a few Real Techniques brushes which everyone knows are very good and I agree. Other brushes I have are the EcoTools ones. I got a set of 5 around a year ago when I was just getting to grips with make-up and I would definitely recommend these to people who want to improve their skills and buy new brushes but don’t want to break the bank. The set I had I can’t find anywhere at the minute to give a price but I’ll update this once I do.

Another thing I have to mention isn’t make up, but a beauty product no less, the Body Shop Body Butter. I have 3 of these to get through at the moment because I seem to buy a new one in a different flavour every time I go. These butters perform miracles on the skin. I used to have quite dry skin on the backs of my arms and on my legs but since using this I am smooth as a baby’s bum. My favourite one is probably passionfruit as it is nice and refreshing, but the red raspberry is a close second because it smells like yoghurt (it’s nicer than it sounds I promise). These are usually around £14 but there is ALWAYS a sale in the Body Shop so keep your eyes peeled, I got 4 for £18 the other week.

One final product I have to throw in is my mascara. It is the very cheap and VERY cheerful £1.99 Miss Sporty fabulous lash mascara. I have naturally quite long lashes so this mascara helps to lift them in colour (enhancing the black) and add a little extra length for umpf (is that even a word????). It is such a bargain and I absolutely swear by it. For a more voluptuous lash for a night out, I will top it up with the Mega Volume mascara by L’oreal. Both products beautifully compliment each other creating a natural false lash effect, definitely worth a try.

As with any other post I hope this wasn’t too waffley and babbly. Please comment/like/follow my blog, have a browse at my other posts and follow my twitter and instagram – @_niamhyx.

Fortune Favours the Brave

Okay so the title of this post makes me sound so inspirational. If only.. Nope, no inspiration here, just my current favourite eye shadow palette.

Now I’m not going to lie, I adore makeup revolution, so my opinion may be bias, but I am so impressed with this new palette by BritishBeautyBlogger. In my eyes, makeup revolution is brilliant. Why spend £30-40 on something they can duplicate for more than half the price? Some may argue it’s half the quality, which in some cases is true, however I wouldn’t call it bad quality, it just takes more time. I myself can safely say I’m not made of money, and own around 8 make up revolution dupe type products that I see no problem with, but I have not used the more high-end products for comparison.

Anyway, I have swatched and reviewed this palette as well as I possibly can (as I said in my intro my interest in makeup is growing so may not be spot on). Also all the pictures included were taken on my iPhone 6 and aren’t amazing quality, apologies.

So the first colours I looked at were; Glimmer, Puffer, Peachy, Pink Diamond, and Favour (left to right). These colours didn’t pick up very well in the swatch, but work great on the lid. I have been using Glimmer with the more bronze shades that will be shown later, as a highlight and it works great. Pink Diamond and Favour work very well together for a glittery pink look, with a tonal blend, and are nicely pigmented.

U3gi5WN_(Hopefully the other pictures show better than this as I had the flash on..)

The next colours I looked at were; Caffeine Fix, Latte, Ice Cloud, New World, Sunset Hour, Super Gold, and Golden Coins (left to right). Okay so I am OBSESSED with the last three colours in this swatch! I have been using them along with Glimmer to highlight for the past few days and it makes such a lovely look for day-to-day occasions you want to dress up with make up. You know what I mean, right? These are all my favourite colours in this palette. Caffeine Fix and Latte are really nice matte base colours which would also work really well alone for a natural daily look. Also the two highlight shades are amazing, I definitely prefer Ice Cloud as it has an outstanding pigment but New World is good also as it has bronze tones to make the look more subtle. Soft and Creme are the two light matte colours on the palette, they wouldn’t show up on a swatch but do work well to blend and highlight under the eyebrow.

Next we have the right hand side of the palette and the darker tones. Here we have; Drama Queen, Winning, Brave, The Revolution, Lonely Planet, Blacqua. The centre three are the sparkly shades in this section and all have black under tones. Personally, I’m not one for dark eye make up as much as I’d love to be, however Blacqua is an incredible shade, literally would not come off my brush so I could swatch the next shade! I do want to try Drama Queen and Winning as although they would not work too well together, they are lovely colours, and I’d definitely go a little out of my comfort zone to try them out.

Finally, my last swatch focused on the upper right of the palette and the green and blue shades. From left to right they are; Fortune, Tip Top, Yes Please, Green Machine, Smoothie, Midnight Rainbow, Transformer, Skylight. Again these aren’t colours I would usually use but I do want to try. I was slightly confused here as the shades that looked more green to me, came out gold. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing though because it meant they’d be put to more use. YES PLEASE. A great shade with a great name. All of the blue shades would definitely work well together too. When swatching these colours I had a scientific epiphany, that probably was not scientific in any way whatsoever. But when I was wiping the brushes clean on the palm of my hand (classy and professional I know, MUA hit me up), I realised that all of these colours looked a lot better on the palm of my hand. Scientist Niamh decided this was because the skin on my palm is a lot more like the eyelid, in my touch comparison. ANYWAY, my point is not that I will be calling NASA any time soon, but that I don’t want to knock any colours until I’ve tried them, and those that didn’t look too good in a swatch may be incredible on the lid – I’ll let you know on that one..

To end, I’m going to stick by my guns. Don’t knock makeup revolution until you’ve tried it. The colours may take a little more time to show colour and to blend, but it’s worth it if you’re looking to save some dollar. I’d highly recommend this palette, especially for the left hand side which I have been using religiously. Also if you do happen to like this product I’d definitely look at some others by makeup revolution, their I Love Makeup highlighters (Too Faced dupes I think) are amazing.

I apologise if my opinion is completely bias, but like I said, this product is definitely worth your time and effort, and measly £10. Bargain.
